Course advising, course substitutions and any other petitions (if needed)

Program Description:

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) minor from the Department of Computer Science is open to all undergraduates in any major (including CS majors) at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

This program will equip the students in foundational knowledge in AI with a rigorous understanding of the mathematical, statistical, and computational foundations of AI.

Provide grounding in core AI paradigms: search, knowledge representation, reasoning, probabilistic models, and machine learning.

The minor courses will present use cases that apply AI techniques to real-world problems in domains like robotics, natural language, and data analytics and ensure familiarity with industry-standard tools and frameworks.

Students will also gain a technical proficiency in machine learning algorithms as well as modern deep learning techniques used in natural language processing and computer vision.

Students will foster the ability to critically analyze AI technologies, including their limitations and trade-offs and integrate AI ethics, fairness, accountability, transparency, and societal impacts as core considerations.

Recommended Roadmap:

Roadmap for CS majors:

Year 1: MAT 1150, CS 2520

Year 2: CS 2410, STA 2260, PHL 3850

Year 3: CS 4200, CS 3760/STS 3760, one elective

Year 4: 3 electives

Business, Engineering, Math or other majors can use the alternative Math and STA requirements as listed in the catalog. Non-CS majors are recommended to take CS 1260.

FAQs: Artificial Intelligence Minor

Whom should I contact for advising questions?
Computer Science Department, College of Science Advising Center, or the AI minor coordinator.

How can I declare the AI minor?
There are no pre-requisites to enroll for the minor. Follow the instructions here to enroll.

Is there a deadline to declare the minor?
The contract must be approved and processed by the Registrar's Office no later than the deadline to clear graduation deficiencies for the semester you have applied to graduate. Since it may take several weeks to months for the Registrar's Office to process a minor application, we encourage students to declare the minor as early as possible.

Can I transfer course credits taken at other universities to meet the requirements?
Only for lower-division courses, and only if they are articulated with the required courses on assist.org.

Can I double count a course towards both my major and the AI minor?
Yes.

I am missing 1 unit for the AI minor because my major requires a 3-unit math course (such as MAT 1250) instead of the 4-unit math course required for the AI minor. What can I do?
If you are short 1 unit because your major requires a 3-unit equivalent math course, you may petition to use 1 unit of additional AI-related mathematics coursework to satisfy the unit requirement. Alternatively, you may petition to count 1 unit of an AI-related seminar, senior project, or internship toward the missing unit. All substitutions require approval through the petition process.

If I take an elective that's related to AI, but not listed in the electives, can I use it to fulfill minor electives?
Please bring a syllabus of the elective course to the AI minor coordinator for evaluation.

How can I drop the AI minor?
Notify the AI minor coordinator and complete a minor drop request through Bronco Direct.
