The Department of Nutrition & Food Science hosted a research showcase on Oct. 15 for students and food industry professionals from throughout Southern California.
The Southern California Institute of Food Technologists Section (SCIFTS) 2025 Research Showcase drew students from Cal Poly Pomona, San Diego State, and Chapman University.
The students gave 18 poster presentations outside Building 2 about their nutrition and food science research.
After the poster session, students and faculty headed to the Coco Palm restaurant in Pomona for the SCIFTS dinner meeting and the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.
The competition challenges graduate students to develop and showcase their research communication skills. There were 11 presentations, with four by Cal Poly Pomona students.
Nutrition and food science graduate students Jocelyne Argueta and Elizabeth Alcarraz took first and second place, respectively.
In addition, SCIFTS awarded 16 scholarships to students at the event. Five Cal Poly Pomona students received scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $4,000.
One of the scholarships is named in memory of the late Nutrition & Food Science Professor Emeritus Wayne Bidlack, who was dean of the College of Agriculture from 1995 to 2007.
