
Three plant science students recorded top 15 finishes this month at the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition.
The competition, which was held at Michigan State University, drew students from more than 50 colleges and universities nationwide.
It featured contests in 30 events, ranging from 3D Exterior Landscape Design to Wood Ornamental Plant Identification.
Magdaleno Basilio and Erik De Leon placed fourth overall in the Irrigation Assembly team event in a field of 38 teams.
Basilio also finished sixth in a field of 29 competitors in the Irrigation Design event and 14th out of 70 competitors in the Turf and Weed Identification event.
Isaiah Baldo placed 12th in the Maintenance Cost Estimating event.


Cal Poly Pomona sent 11 students to the competition. Basilio was the team’s highest scorer, finishing with 280 points and ranking 40th among 726 participating students.
Plant Science Lecturer Sean McLaughlin is the team’s advisor.
The annual event is sponsored by the National Association of Landscape Professionals as a competition and career recruitment event that brings college students together with horticulture and landscaping industry representatives.
