Each year, Cal Poly Pomona recognizes a select group of graduating students with one of the university’s highest distinctions, the Julian A. McPhee Honor Award for Student Excellence. Named after the university’s founding president, the award honors students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and a commitment to their communities.
Daniel Mendoza (TOM ’26) has earned this prestigious distinction as an honoree from the Class of 2026. A Technology and Operations Management student, Mendoza graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA, exemplifying what it means to “Become by Doing” through dedication and purpose.
Mendoza’s Journey
Mendoza found his path at Cal Poly Pomona through connection and curiosity, embracing opportunities to learn both inside and outside the classroom.
He was actively involved in Acts2Fellowship, where he built meaningful relationships and developed a strong sense of community that extended beyond campus. Professionally, Mendoza gained valuable experience as an operations intern at Cardinal Health, where he strengthened his analytical and problem-solving skills in a real-world environment.
“This experience allowed me to develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills, while gaining insight into a large-scale supply chain operation,” he said.
Mendoza credits much of his growth to the mentorship of faculty, particularly within the Technology and Operations Management department. Their support and guidance played a pivotal role in shaping his academic journey.
“The professors at Cal Poly Pomona, especially in the TOM department, have been instrumental, going above and beyond to support and challenge me,” Mendoza said. “Their dedication to knowing and investing in students on an individual level has left a lasting impression on me.”
What’s Next

Following graduation, Mendoza will step into a full-time role as an operations supervisor at Cardinal Health in Sacramento, where he aims to make a meaningful impact by supporting the delivery of essential health care products.
Mendoza represents the very best of Cal Poly Pomona. As a 2026 McPhee Scholar, he reflects the spirit of a student who has embraced challenges, built community, and prepared to lead with purpose. As he takes the next step beyond CPP, he carries forward the legacy of excellence that defines the McPhee Scholar honor.
