Returning from Military Service

Welcome Back!

Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) is a proud military friendly campus that is grateful to serve and support its returning Veterans and military service members.  As a former student, review the information below to determine if you can return to CPP based on military service.

Returning Veterans and Military Service Members

Returning Veterans and military service members are formerly enrolled Cal Poly Pomona students that left the University to fulfill their US military obligations, and are now seeking to return to complete their degree.

Types of Military Leave of Absence

Cal Poly Pomona students that have a break in attendance due to serving in the U.S. military may be eligible for:

Deferred Admission

  • Admitted incoming students that are unable to attend their first semester due to military service or training.

 Military Leave of Absence

  • CPP students that are required to pause their enrollment due to military service.

Readmission

  • Veterans and military service members that were away due to military service and did not have an approved leave of absence.

If one of the above conditions applies to you, contact the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) at (909) 869-6994 or at vetquestions@cpp.edu to discuss your next steps.

As provided by the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (HEOA), students will be allowed to return to the same program with the same academic standing based on the following provisions:

  • The absence is due to military service in the U.S. Armed Forces, including the National Guard or Reserves.
  • The cumulative length of all absences for service in the Armed Forces may not exceed five years of time spent performing service.
  • The servicemember or veteran notifies the Veterans Resource Center or Registrar’s Office of their intent to re-enroll within 3 years of completion of military service.
  • A student who is injured or becomes ill as a consequence of military service must submit their intent to re-enroll no later than two years after the end of the period that is necessary for recovery from such illness or injury.

Eligibility under the HEOA terminates upon any of the following criteria:

  • Being separated from the Armed Forces with a dishonorable discharge.
  • Being dismissed as permitted under section 1161(a) of title 10, United States Code.
  • Being dropped from the rolls pursuant to section 1161(b) of title 10, United States Code.

Military service members or veterans that are not eligible under HEOA are subject to current CPP admissions requirements.   If this applies to you, visit the CPP Returning Student website for more information.
