An animal health science student, a food science and technology student, a plant science grad student, two professors and a staff member were selected for the Huntley College of Agriculture’s 2025-26 awards.
Kaitlyn Saltikov was named the Julian A. McPhee Outstanding Student Scholar as the college’s valedictorian. Saltikov is an animal health science major who plans to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam to become a registered veterinary technician. She hopes to find work in an emergency or general practice hospital after graduation.
Assistant Professor Lucas Krusinski of the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences was named the college’s Teacher of the Year. Hired in 2024, Krusinski was described as “an outstanding professor who demonstrates genuine care and compassion for students, adjusting instruction to support their individual needs.”
“He thoroughly enjoys his lectures and teaching students in class,” another person said.
Assistant Professor Eshwar Ravishankar of the Department of Plant Science was named the college’s Faculty Advisor of the Year. Hired in 2023, Ravishankar was described as a great mentor and advisor.
“He actively supports other students in plant science by providing guidance on research opportunities, senior projects, and academic planning,” one person wrote. “His effectiveness as an advisor comes from his accessibility, clear communication, and investment in student success.”
Cal Poly Pomona honored Ravishankar and other 2025-26 outstanding advisors at an April 23 reception.
Rebecca Keong, the college’s budget analyst, received the Staff of the Year Award. Hired in 2020, Keong was lauded for exceptional professionalism and dedication in supporting students, faculty, and staff.
“Her expertise and communication skills have been invaluable, particularly during periods with limited (administrative support coordinator) support,” one person wrote. “Rebecca provides outstanding guidance on student assistant hiring and funding, ensuring work hours are charged to the correct accounts and remain within budget.”
Alexander Gomez and Megan Kelly were named the John E. Andrews Student Leaders of the Year for their scholarship, service, and contributions to fellow students, their departments, the community, and respective industries.
Gomez, the undergraduate recipient, was part of the Cal Poly Pomona team that won the Pacific Southwest College Bowl in March – the university’s fourth consecutive victory – and led a team of students that won a product development competition.
“Besides leading the team, Alex’s role was formulation and processing,” one person wrote in nominating Gomez. “His broad food science knowledge, attention to detail, leadership, and critical thinking were pivotal in taking this project beyond the classroom.”
Gomez also served as president of the Food Science Society and Phi Tau Sigma honor society.
Kelly, the graduate student recipient, was praised for her work on her plant science research project.
“She is brilliant, thoughtful, and creative. She approaches the project dynamically, being flexible when things need to change, listening intently to feedback, and being collaborative about everything,” one person wrote.
