Mission & Goals

Mission

Two male students in white lab coats examine equipment in a greenhouse.

The Department of Plant Science’s mission is to fully prepare students with the skill set that is required for career success in plant-based agriculture in the 21st century.

Goals

A female professor examines insects collected in a tube by a male student at the farm.

In alignment with Cal Poly Pomona and the Huntley College of Agriculture, the department will:

  • provide science-based knowledge of plant growth and development in a variety of climatic conditions, focusing on a quality end product.
  • educate our students to provide the critical thinking skills necessary to solve a variety of complex, interdisciplinary problems that impact plants and their environment. This includes the economic and business aspects impacting marketing.
  • provide agricultural experiential learning opportunities for students to enhance the classroom and laboratory experience.
  • provide students with a thorough understanding of agriculture’s impact on our environment and instill stewardship of land, landscapes, and natural resources.
  • promote professionalism and leadership skills, preparing our graduates for diverse careers in plant science and related industries.
  • instill the virtues of lifelong learning and continuing education to maintain relevance within a graduate’s chosen field.
  • continue to communicate and collaborate with the agricultural community and alumni to enhance the education of the students and the continuity of the agricultural industry
