EML Professor Takes Prize in Public Humanities Contest

Professor Liam Corley in Cal Poly’s English & Modern Languages Department was selected from scores of faculty applications from around the country to give a public presentation of his research on veterans in American Literature at the Modern Language Association’s annual convention in Chicago on January 5, 2019. Eight participants in the “Humanities in Five” panel gave five-minute presentations in accessible language on their current research projects. The contest was judged by Chicago journalists and was hosted by Scott Jaschik of Inside Higher Ed. Dr. Corley received third prize in the contest for a presentation entitled, “The Voice of the Veteran in American Literature.”

MLA President Anne Ruggles Gere, Gertrude Buck Collegiate Professor at the University of Michigan, organized the contest to provide models of public-facing scholarship for scholars working in the humanities. The complete panel with all eight presenters is available on the MLA website: https://www.mla.org/Convention/Convention-History/Past-Conventions/2019-Convention/Humanities-in-Five-A-Contest
