[CANCELED] BERNARD ZIMMERMAN LECTURE SERIES:

Established in Paris in 1987 by Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal, Lacaton & Vassal has designed commercial, educational, cultural, and residential buildings. A connecting thread across their work is the desire to find the essential in each situation and to create a modest language based on an economy of means. In projects such as the conversion of the Palais de Tokyo or their social housing refurbishments, Lacaton & Vassal make intelligent re-use of the existing, minimizing new building through innovative design and through an appreciation of the transformative possibilities in each situation.

Projects include the FRAC in Dunkerque, France; the Palais de Tokyo in Paris; and sites for contemporary creation including the architecture school in Nantes and the Café of the Architektur Zentrum in Vienna. The studio also worked on the transformation of social housing estates, including Tour Bois le Prêtre in Paris and Cité du Grand Parc, Bordeaux; and a number of housing projects in France, such as the House Latapie, Bordeaux; the House in the Trees on Arcachon Bay, France; the "Cité Manifeste" in Mulhouse, France; and social housing and student housing in Paris.

Anne Lacaton was born in France in 1955. She graduated from the School of Architecture of Bordeaux in1980 and has been a visiting professor at the University of Madrid, Master Housing since 2007, at EPFL Lausanne, 2004, 2006, 2010-11 and 2017, at the University of Florida: Ivan Smith Studio in 2012, at the University of NY-Buffalo: Clarkson Chair in 2013, at the Pavillon Neuflize OBC-Palais de Tokyo, Paris, in 2013-2014, at Harvard GSD: Kenzo Tange 2011 & Design critic 2015, at Sassari University in Alghero 2014 & 2015, at TU Delft, sem 2016-17. Since 2017, she has been a professor at ETH Zürich.

Jean Philippe Vassal was born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1954. He graduated from the School of Architecture of Bordeaux in 1980 and worked as an urban planner in Niger from 1980 to 1985. He has been a visiting professor at the TU in Berlin (2007-11), at the Peter Behrens School of architecture in Düsseldorf 2005, at EPFL Lausanne in 2010-11, at the Pavillon Neuflize OBC-Palais de Tokyo, Paris, in 2013-2014, at Sassari University in Alghero 2014 & 2015. Since 2012, he has been a professor at the UDK Berlin.
