Behind the Design

These types of classrooms generally start off as standard builds but cater more towards teaching environments that heavily emphasize student engagement and break-out sessions. With this in mind, Active Learning spaces feature multiple areas to direct attention to rather than to a single focal point like with lecture-style classrooms. This opens up instructional approaches to variety and experimentation with the purpose of reinforcing material retention.

So what does this room type add?

Open Classroom Configurations

Since active learning spaces lean more towards group activities and walk-ability, every active learning space takes cues from the specific discipline it is intended to instruct for. Whether it be breakout pods around the walls, or scattered about, the design encourages collaboration in all directions.

Presentation Flexibility

With the additional student connectivity, this allows our teams to program the classroom systems to allow for a multitude of ways to present content across the room. Either split across specific displays, or duplicated amongst them all, every input source in an Active Learning space can be individually addressed allowing for a surprising amount of flexibility in all kinds of different class and activity structures.

Advanced Technology

Most active learning spaces build off of the Standard Room technological platform, but expand it to include multiple devices like wireless presentation, laptop connections, and individualized controls available to the students.

Touch Screen Monitor

All Active Learning spaces include a touch-screen monitor at the instructor station that can be moved around on an arm to allow the instructor flexibility when taking notes or moving from the whiteboard in order to further encourage engagement with everyone in the class.

HyFlex and Other Additions

While not necessary, HyFlex capabilities can also be considered on top of an Active Learning spaces design, and much of the Active Learning classroom/labs have cameras, microphones, and speakers mounted in the room allowing for asynchronous and hybrid classes to take place.
