FST Students Win College Bowl for 2nd Year

April 2, 2024

For the second consecutive year, a team of Cal Poly Pomona students has won a regional food science competition.

Team Captain Jemierie Javellana, Alexander Mathios, Chun Choi, Estrella Mandujano, Jane Wangjaya, Camille McCurry, and Nancy Siridachanon took first place in the Pacific Southwest College Bowl, which was held March 23 on the Cal Poly Pomona campus.

The competition challenges students on their knowledge of food science and technology, the history of foods and food processing, food law, and general food-related trivia.

The Cal Poly Pomona team beat out teams from Fresno State, Chapman University, Cal State Long Beach, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

The event is sponsored by the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA) and held in the Bronco Student Center Ursa Major.

The Food Science Society, which is the Cal Poly Pomona chapter of IFTSA, hosted the event. Viet Pham, the IFTSA liaison, did much of the organization for the event.

By winning the Pacific Southwest College Bowl, the team earned the right to participate in the national College Bowl at the Institute of Food Technologists annual convention in Chicago this July.

The students will compete against teams from seven other regions nationwide.

Lecturer Karoline Harrison is the Cal Poly Pomona team’s advisor.
