About the “Equity in Practice” Symposium
The Center for the Advancement for Faculty Excellence (CAFE), the Office of Student Success, Equity and Innovation (OSS), and Institutional Research, Planning, and Analytics (IRPA) invite the campus community to join us at the Equity in Practice Symposium. We will celebrate CPP's progress towards student success, share effective practices, and spread the word about campus resources. We’ll also present the Wall of COOL 2024 awards!

Desdemona Cardoza is a retired Professor of Psychology at California State University Los Angeles. She is currently working as a Special Consultant to the California State University Office of the Chancellor. She has served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of Natural and Social Sciences, Vice President for Information Technology and Director of Institutional Research at California State University Los Angeles. She received her MA and Ph.D. in Psychology from UC Riverside and her BA in Psychology from UC Berkeley.10:05am - 10:25am

I have 20 years of experience in condensed matter research, mostly on magnetism and superconductivity. However, several years ago I changed my research focus to education research (and my job title to Senior Lecturer to reflect the change in research focus). My research interests in education are very broad but the actual research that I choose to work on is always quite practical. Since 2005, or so, I have been involved in highly interactive introductory physics classes. We call these courses CLASP (for Collaborative Learning through Active Sense-making in Physics) because they always ask the students to make their own sense of the physical ideas that we would like them to understand and to be prepared to argue for their point of view.3:15pm - 3:30pm
