Cost of Attendance Elements

Tuition and fees are paid directly to Cal Poly Pomona but are only a part of a student’s education costs. The overall Cost of Attendance is broadly defined as the average cost to attend Cal Poly Pomona for one academic year, (which consists of the Fall and Spring semesters) and includes additional expenses ranging from transportation to books and course materials.

Here’s a breakdown of the cost of attendance elements you should take into consideration after tuition and fees:

  • Food and Housing
  • Transportation between campus, place of residence, and place of work
  • Books, course materials, supplies, and equipment
  • Personal Expenses
  • Dependent Care Expenses (for those who have one or more dependents)
  • Direct Loan origination fees (for those who borrow a Federal Direct loan)

Visit our Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships website for a full listing of the cost of attendance elements, to view our current standard cost of attendance budgets, and to learn about the variety of resources that may help reduce your overall costs.

Loans

Direct Unsubsidized Loans

Graduate Students are eligible for unsubsidized federal loans. The Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan is a government insured, low interest loan for eligible graduate students. If you borrow an Unsubsidized Loan, you are responsible for paying the interest from the time loan funds are released until the loan has been repaid in full. For current interest rate and origination fee information please visit the Federal Student Aid website.

Graduate PLUS Loans

The Graduate PLUS Loan is an additional loan available for those graduate students who need additional funds, beyond the Unsubsidized Loan, to cover their remaining education costs. Unlike the Unsubsidized Loan, PLUS Loans require credit approval.

Graduate PLUS Loans are not included in your initial financial aid package. The loan is not added to the aid package until the request has been processed and Cal Poly Pomona receives notification that you have been credit approved.  For current interest rate and origination fee information please visit the Federal Student Aid website for Graduate PLUS Loans.

Payment Plans

All students are now eligible to enroll in a Monthly Payment Plan to cover tuition and fees. The plan will provide you with the option to start making smaller, monthly payments in advance of the semester. Enroll EARLY (even before registration) in order to lock in the longest payment term and smallest monthly payments!  To learn more, visit https://www.cpp.edu/student-accounting/payment-options/paymentplan.shtml

The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, the CSU must reserve the right, even after initial payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees, without notice, until the date for a particular semester or quarter has begun. All CSU listed fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, or the Presidents, as appropriate. Changes in mandatory systemwide fees will be made in accordance with the requirements of the Working Families Student Fee Transparency and Accountability Act (Sections 66028 - 66028.6 of the Education Code).
