Incoming Exchange Students

J-1 Incoming Exchange Student Admissions

  1. Only students from our exchange partner universities can participate in the exchange program. Our current exchange partners are: 
  • France: Paris School of Business
  • Germany: Hochschule Biberach
  • Germany: Leibniz University Hannover
  • South Korea: Dankook University
  • Taiwan: National Taiwan University of Science and Technology
  • Taiwan: National Yunlin University of Science and Technology
  • UK: Strathclyde University, Scotland

     2. Check eligibility and requirements with the exchange program coordinator at your university.  Have your coordinator nominate you to Cal Poly Pomona by the exchange deadline:
               Fall: March 15
               Spring: September 15


  1. Copy of Passport page showing your photo, full legal name, and place of birth
  2. Proof of Financial Support - A current bank letter or statement in English must accompany your application showing at least $7,000 U.S. dollars on deposit for each semester (term) you will attend Cal Poly Pomona.
  3. Official Transcripts (in English)
  4. Passport Size Photo (Size 2 inches x 2 inches) 
  5. Official TOEFL Score
    • All students must include proof of English language proficiency by submitting a recent computer-based TOEFL test score of at least 71 internet-based, 197 computer-based, or 527-530 paper-based.
    • Students from the following countries are exempt: Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and the U.K. More information about the TOEFL test can be found at http://www.ets.org/toefl/

  • After nomination, CPP will invite you to apply via a private application link.
  • Acceptance and offer Letter will be issued to accepted students along with DS-2019 document.
  • Student applies for J-1 student exchange visa in home country.

After Being Accepted

  • We will contact you to make the necessary arrangements for your study here at Cal Poly Pomona.
  • You can view your housing options and let us know which housing you prefer. Please apply for housing ONLY after consulting with us. Exchange students normally choose the Village Apartments.
  • Health Insurance Coverage. You must have health insurance coverage for your entire length of stay in the United States.  Further information about insurance will be provided after acceptance. 
    • Students are required to purchase an approved policy through the Cal Poly Pomona International Center upon arrival at a competitive premium of approximately $475.00 per semester (this fee is subject to change)
  • How to Purchase health insurance with Cal Poly Pomona. www.jcbins.com → "Enroll Online Now!" → Choose "Cal Poly Pomona" → Enroll in the exchange policy
    • Find your school by typing Cal Poly Pomona.
    • Select Plan Year and Exchange Program then GO.
    • Click Start Here and select your specific term and follow all prompts to complete enrollment.

  • Bring the following to the International Center, Building 1, Room 104 once you arrive: 
  • Attend exchange student orientation (Dates are TBA)

J-1 Incoming Exchange Student Estimated Expenses

  Living On-Campus
Tuition and fees* (Fees only, tuition is waived for exchange partners) $850
Books, course materials, supplies, and equipment $400
Living expenses, including food and housing costs $4700
Miscellaneous, personal expenses $2000
Transportation $550
TOTAL $8500

NOTE: All exchange students are excluded from paying campus tuition.
*Students on exchange via bilateral exchange agreements directly with Cal Poly Pomona are only responsible for the Student Success Fee. All other exchange students are responsible for paying all campus fees. Please see the term schedule of fees here.
