OUR STEM VISTA Projects

OUR Chats
Romina-Marie Baronia

Conceptualizing OUR Chats began with two questions: how can we improve undergraduate research's branding, and how can I achieve this in connection to my role? As part of my onboarding in the CSU STEM VISTA program, we were tasked with conducting research and gathering scholarly articles that would aid us in the conceptualization and implementation of our projects. Therefore, I researched and perused works related to the retention of STEM students in undergraduate research, and a common theme was establishing a sense of belonging for them. There are various factors that can play into creating such an environment, one being faculty relationships and the other cultural connections, which caught my attention. As a recent college graduate from University of Redlands (Class of 2022), I can attest that these two traits - whether combined or separate - were true for me. I had a mentor that left a positive impact in my academic career, and as I reflect on it now, our similar backgrounds profoundly empowered me as a student at a pre-dominantly white institution.

Fostering Success: A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding Peer Mentorship and Building a Peer Mentoring Program
Jeremy Aquino
Jeremy led an impactful VISTA project centered around the development of comprehensive training modules hosted on Canvas. These modules were designed to cater to faculty and administrators who wished to establish or enhance peer mentoring programs.
Jeremy was motivated by a desire to understand effective peer mentoring with a personal aspiration to integrate these insights into his own mentoring activities.

The primary objective of the training modules was to establish a standardized and consistent training approach across diverse peer mentoring programs. By doing so, the project aimed to strengthen existing practices within these programs, ultimately fostering improved outcomes for both mentors and mentees.
Comprising four distinct modules, this training initiative provided an overview of various facets of peer mentoring:

1.    Introduction to Peer Mentoring: This module offered a foundational understanding of the concept of peer mentoring.
2.    Exploring the Role of Peer Mentors: Delving into the pivotal role of peer mentors, this module illuminated the responsibilities, skills, and qualities that contribute to effective mentorship.
3.    Best Training Practices: Focused on programmatic aspects, this module detailed the most effective training practices within peer mentoring.
4.    Equity-Mindedness in Peer Mentoring: Acknowledging the importance of inclusivity, this module shed light on fostering equity and diversity within peer mentoring programs.
