Poly-Kroma consists of three distinct shows that celebrate Visual Communication Design and Fine Art directly resulting from coursework completed within the Art Department.  The two main exhibition components of Poly-Kroma  include: the Industry Portfolio Showcase—also known as the graduating senior Visual Communication Design majors exhibition; and the  2D3D+ Juried Student Art Show—the annual Art Department’s student exhibition.

Starting this year, an additional multi-media event is added to Poly-Kroma and spearheaded by Department of Art Assistant Professors Jian Lee and Jeff Ray. The 2024 Poly-Kroma Motion Festival both celebrates, and features, time-based artwork —including motion graphics and animation— by Visual Communication Design students of all grade levels. The festival is curated by faculty and industry leaders. This year’s Motion Festival is held after the 2D3D+ Opening Reception & Award Ceremony on April 29th, 8-9pm, and will be screened outdoors, on the University Park lawn in front of the Kellogg University Art Gallery. The Motion Festival is also given space within the Kellogg Art Gallery to be on view throughout the duration of the Poly-Kroma exhibition.

Industry Day functions as a capstone experience for the Visual Communication Design major, and serves to present the work of seniors to the professional and surrounding community. This year, the Industry Portfolio Showcase is exhibited in the Back Gallery of the Kellogg University Art Gallery, while the 2D3D+ exhibition is located in the two Front Galleries (East and West) and part of the Corridor Gallery in the center of the space.

The 2D3D+ Annual Juried Show is a competition-based exhibition, juried by industry professionals, including alumni, and displays the art and design work of students in the Bachelor of Fine Art program, featuring fine art and graphic and visual communication design work by students at all academic levels.

Kim Abeles’ art crosses disciplines and media to explore biography, geography and environment. She has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for the Visual Arts, California Community Foundation and Pollack-Krasner Foundation. She has created artwork with a unique range of collaborators including California Bureau of Automotive Repair, California Science Center, Department of Mental Health, and natural history museums in California, Colorado and Florida. In 1987, she innovated a method to create images from the smog in the air, and Smog Collectors brought her work to international attention, and were recently exhibited in New York at the United Nations Headquarters. Abeles’ journals and process documents are archived at the Center for Art+Environment, Nevada Museum of Art.

Her work is in public collections including MOCA, LACMA, CAAM, Berkeley Art Museum, and National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. NEA-funded projects involved a residency at the Institute of Forest Genetics; and Valises for Camp Ground with Camp 13, a group of female prison inmates who fight wildfires. Her public art includes Citizen Seeds along the Park to Playa Trail, and Walk a Mile in My Shoes, based on the shoes of Civil Rights marchers and local activists. Abeles most recently guest curated Above & Below: Views from AltaSea’s Blue Hour [Artists] at CPP in partnership with the AltaSea Institute which featured local female artists showcasing work that address the ocean with respect to social and environmental issues. Recent articles about her projects are published in the New York Times, Hyperallergic, and Social Practice: Technologies for Change (Routledge Press).

John Felipe Miranda was born and raised in Pomona and graduated from Cal Poly in 2017. Since he was a kid, he had loved cinema. The idea of being involved in the making of a film always infatuated him. His influences were filmmakers like Guillermo Del Toro and David Fincher who started their careers working on film productions doing concept art and matte paintings. During his time at Cal Poly Pomona, he fell in love with illustration. Professor Ann Phong mentored and taught him about expressionism and how to master proportions. Taking his learning of traditional drawing and expressive painting, he applied them to his design work to define his style.

He spent the first two years in the industry working for BLT Communications in Hollywood. There, he began his journey in entertainment design working on posters and packaging. Miranda had the opportunity there to work and learn with the best designers in the industry and work alongside Los Angeles' greatest Mexican Creative Director, Carlos Gutierrez. In his short, but illustrious career, Miranda won his first ever Clio Award for “Best Specialty Package Design” for the movie Isle of Dogs. Later, he won several more for his poster designs for Once Upon a time in Hollywood and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, and more. His work has been featured on Vogue for 3D-painting, in Vanity Fair for his concept drawings for HBO's Righteous Gemstones, and Forbes for his package design for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

With the pandemic hitting the Film and TV industries hard, Miranda decided to venture as an independent designer. He's gotten to expand his media working on conceptual illustration, 3D-modeling, fashion, and stage production including working with Bad Bunny, multiple television shows, and documentaries for HBO. His career has expanded to many circles within the entertainment industry, but he finds himself trying new things like teaching his first illustration course at Cal Poly Pomona, painting a series or artworks about his Mexican upbring, and learning how to 3D sculpt for toy design.
