Access Services

Borrow & Renew


The University Library provides borrowing privileges to current students, faculty, staff, affiliated individuals, and visitors who wish to purchase a membership. All current students, faculty, and staff are automatically registered with the University Library.

A Cal Poly Pomona Bronco Access Card, or an issued library card, is required when completing any type of library transactions, e.g., checking out materials, renewing items, and placing holds. An email confirmation will be sent to the email address provided with the loan and the due date(s) when checking out materials. A return receipt will be emailed upon returning library materials.

Library materials may be returned at the Circulation Desk, the Self-Check In machines (located in the University Library's 1st floor lobby and outside the entrance on the South wall), and at the book return bin adjacent to the Student Services Building.

Please note: Fines will be assessed upon returning items. Overdue items must be renewed at the Circulation Desk. Overdue items CANNOT be renewed online. Please visit our Lost & Overdue Fines page for further information.

Patron Types

Undergraduate Students and Open University students within the College of the Extended University are entitled to the following borrowing privileges:

  • A total of 30 general circulating books may be borrowed for 16 weeks (1 renewal allowed).
  • Media items may be checked out for a period of 30 days.
  • Reserve material checkout varies depending on the material. Checkout durations are determined by the instructor. Availability is first-come, first-serve. Please check the online catalog for availability of course reserve material.
  • Atlas/Maps may be borrowed for 16 weeks.
  • Interlibrary Loan
    • CSU+ items may be borrowed for 16 weeks (No renewals)
    • ILLiad loan periods are determined by the lending library
  • Comics/Graphic Novels may be checked out for 28 days.

In addition to physical items, Cal Poly Pomona students can access the library's online databases with their Bronco username and password. Prior students that are still completing their theses must have their sponsor/advisor request an IT Sponsored Affiliates form in order to access library services. Please visit your library account to view the status of your current checked out items and requests.

SUSPENSION OF LIBRARY PRIVILEGES

Overdue items with fines of $5.00 or more are subject to suspension of library privileges until all the materials are returned and fines are paid. Patrons who fail to pay fines will be sent to the California Franchise Tax Board for payment.

Graduate students are entitled to the following privileges:

  • A total of 30 general circulating books may be borrowed for 16 weeks (1 renewal allowed).
  • Media items may be checked out for a period of 30 days.

CPP Faculty, Staff, and Emeriti have the following borrowing privileges:

  • A total of 150 general circulating books may be borrowed for 1 year (renewals allowed). However, if another patron places a hold on a checked-out book, the due date will revert to the minimum 30-day loan period.
  • Media items may be checked out for a period of 30 days.
  • Reserve material checkout varies depending on the material. Checkout durations are determined by the instructor. Availability is first-come, first-serve. Please check the online catalog for availability of course reserve material.
  • Atlas/Maps may be borrowed for 16 weeks.
  • Interlibrary Loan
    • CSU+ items may be borrowed for 16 weeks (No renewals)
    • ILLiad loan periods are determined by the lending library
  • Comics/Graphic Novels may be checked out for 16 weeks.

SUSPENSION OF LIBRARY PRIVILEGES

Failure to return or renew overdue materials is subject to suspension of library privileges until all materials are returned or fees for lost material are paid. At the time of payroll clearance all privileges are blocked and the final pay warrant will be held until fees are paid in full. Patrons who fail to pay fees will be sent to the California Franchise Tax Board for payment.

Current I-Poly Faculty MUST have their I-Poly/Library Photo ID and register at the second floor Circulation Desk. Your Cal Poly barcode is for your personal use ONLY. When you accept your barcode, you assume the responsibility for all materials that are checked you. You must carry your I-Poly ID/Library card at al times while visiting the library. Library accounts for I-Poly faculty expire June 30th of each year.

Conditions: A limit of 30 items may be checked out for 16 weeks with no renewals. Additionally, I-Poly Faculty may request reference assistance by appointment.

SUSPENSION OF LIBRARY PRIVILEGES

Failure to return overdue material will result in temporary loss of borrowing privileges until they are returned or paid for. At the time of separation, a hold will be placed on the final pay warrant for library obligations.

All authorized I-Poly High School students may register with the Cal Poly Pomona University Library. You MUST have your I-Poly ID with affixed barcode to register at the second floor Circulation Desk. You must carry your I-Poly ID card at all times while visiting the library.

Conditions: A total of 10 items may be borrowed for 30 days and may be renewed online through My Library Account, NOT BY PHONE. 

I-Poly students DO NOT have special materials or items privileges, including mediated online searching, electronic resources remotely, reference assistance by appointment, Interlibrary Loan, or electronic resource software.

SUSPENSION OF LIBRARY PRIVILEGES

Overdue items with fines of $5.00 or more are subject to subject to suspension of library privileges until all the materials are returned and fines are paid. An automatic system block will prevent a patron from checking out library materials. I-Poly Administrative staff will be notified of students who fail to pay fines. 

Other Visiting Patrons

To obtain borrowing privileges, visitors must have one of the following affiliations to the Cal Poly Pomona Library:

The library will grant borrowing privileges to "Courtesy Borrowers," or individuals with special ties to the university and members of an affiliated group. They are: members in good standing of the Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association, Cal Poly Associates, Chancellor's Associates, other CSU Alumni Associates, University Corporate Associates, Parent Family Association, and the spouses and domestic partners of Cal Poly Pomona faculty and staff. A courtesy borrower must be 18 years of age or older. Library accounts will expire when eligibility ends or membership to the affiliated group expires.

Conditions: A total of 10 books may be borrowed for 30 days. Book(s) can be renewed online through My Library Account, NOT BY PHONE. One or more book(s) overdue will keep you in delinquent status and no further transactions will be allowed until overdue status is cleared.
Courtesy borrowers DO NOT have special materials or items privileges, including Reserve books, periodicals, Interlibrary Loan, media checkout, remote database, e-book, or e-journal access. For more detailed information, please email the Circulation Desk .

The University Library grants walk-in user privileges to current CSU Students, Faculty, Staff, visiting scholars, and Extended University/Open University students. A valid driver's license, California ID, or an official photo ID and a current campus identification card must be provided to create a library account with the Cal Poly Pomona University Library.

CONDITIONS: A total of 20 books may be borrowed for 16 weeks (non-renewable). CSU visitors are also allowed to place 5 CSU+ physical item requests (CSU Libraries) and have access to remote databases, eBooks, and e-journals through their home campus library OneSearch. Checked-out items may be returned to any CSU Library. One or more overdue book(s) will keep your account in delinquent status and no further transactions will be allowed until the overdue status is cleared.

CSU visitors DO NOT have access to ILLiad requests, Special Collections, Course Reserves, periodicals, and the Compact Shelving collection. For more detailed information, please email the Circulation Desk.

CPP has a mutual agreement with Mt SAC and visitors from Mt. SAC can borrow from the library. Individuals from Mt. SAC must provide a valid driver's license, California ID or an official photo ID and their campus identification card, along with verification of enrollment for the semester/verification of employment.

CONDITIONSA total of 10 books may be borrowed for 30 days. Book(s) can be renewed up to two times online using My Library Account, NOT BY PHONE. One or more book(s) overdue will keep you in delinquent status and no further transactions will be allowed.
Mt. SAC patrons DO NOT have Special Materials or Items privileges, including Reserve books, periodicals, Interlibrary Loan, media checkout, remote database, e-book, or e-journal access. For more detailed information, please email the Circulation Desk.

Special programs include: Cal Poly English Language Institute, International Scholars, CSU External Degree Program, AQMD, and Red Cross. Each applicant must provide proof of identity (official photo ID) and proof of appropriate and current affiliation to the participating institution (a work ID, badge, or current pay stub).

The collections and services of the University Library are funded by the California Legislature for the specific purposes of supporting the University's academic programs. Therefore, the University LIbrarys is precluded from making its resources available to off-campus patrons should doing so interfere with academic needs. However, the library recognizes that groups or individuals referred to as "Visitors" may have need for its services. The library will grant borrowing privileges to a corporation and its employees.
An authorized corporate administrator may request borrowing privileges for his business and employees. By doing so, s/he assumes the financial responsibility in the event that an individual employee fails to meet their obligations to the library. Either the administrator or a selected employee will represent the company as the "Primary" card holder. The person will bring to the circulation desk a letter on the company's letter head requesting corporate borrowing privileges as well as giving the "primary" cardholder's name. An annual, nonrefundable, fifty dollars ($50.00) group registration fee will be collected from the "primary" cardholder. All other employees will each pay an annual, nonrefundable five dollars ($5.00) use fee, which will expire concurrently with the "Primary" card's date. All registration fees are payable by check or credit card (Visa or MasterCard) ONLY.

CONDITIONS:A total of 10 books may be borrowed for 30 days. Books can be renewed online through My Library Account, NOT BY PHONE. One or more book(s) overdue, will keep you in delinquent status and no further transactions will be allowed until overdue status is cleared.
Reserve, Periodical, Interlibrary Loan, and other short term loan items MAY NOT be checked out by visitors.

Any visitors who are not members of any of the above affiliate groups and still wish to borrow materials from the Cal Poly Pomona University Library may only do so with a paid membership. Membership can be purchased at the Circulation Desk for an annual, nonrefundable fifty dollar ($50.00) registration fee. Registration fees are payable by check or credit card only.

SUSPENSION OF BORROWING PRIVILEGES

Failure to return overdue books and/or pay fees will result in temporary loss of borrowing privileges. Repeated or serious infringements will result in a permanent loss of borrowing privileges, and failure to pay fees will result in patrons being sent to the California Franchise Tax Board.

Special Items

  • CD's, Video Cassettes, DVD's: a maximum of 10 materials for 30 days with no renewals may be borrowed. Items must be returned by closing time.
  • CSU+ items: may be borrowed for 16 weeks with no renewals.
  • ILLiad: loan periods and renewal limits are determined by the lending library. Average loan period is 2-3 weeks.
  • Reserves: loan periods vary depending on material. Please see Course Reserve Lending Policies for more information.
  • Comics/Graphic Novels:
    • loan period is 28 days for all students with no renewals.
    • loan period is 16 weeks for faculty & staff with no renewals.
  • Tech Lending: Tech Lending loans periods vary depending on the equipment type. Please see our Tech Lending Program page for more information.

ATTEMPTED THEFT

In order to prevent the theft of books and library materials, State Law authorizes patron detention when suspected of committing "Library Theft." Cal Poly Pomona students, faculty, or staff attempting to leave the library without properly checking out library materials (repeat offenders) may face disciplinary action. Students will have their names forwarded to the Director of Judicial Affairs, and faculty and staff will be forwarded to the Vice President's office. I-Poly students will have their names forwarded to I-Poly administration. Public guests who are repeat offenders will be forwarded to the Cal Poly Police Department.
