SURE

Summer Undergraduate Research Experience

SURE is a summer research experience for undergraduates where Cal Poly Pomona and partnering community colleges send STEM and non-STEM students to participate in high-level faculty-mentored research projects over an eight-week program. Cal Poly Pomona and community college students that participate in SURE have the opportunity to present their culminating research projects at our annual Cal Poly Pomona Creative Activities & Research Symposium (CPP CARS).

Program Description

Cal Poly Pomona is widely recognized for its polytechnic mission and learning-by-doing philosophy which is closely linked with the research experience. The Office of Undergraduate Research at Cal Poly Pomona (OUR-CPP) works proactively on creating Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates by partnering with surrounding community colleges. The summer research program has been ongoing since 2014 and has provided the opportunity for 100 community college students to work with CPP faculty and students on comprehensive and high-level research projects.

2024 Summer Program Application Now Open

The eight-week Summer REU program application is now actively recruiting students for summer 2024. Both Cal Poly Pomona and community college students are encouraged to apply. Please apply through the ENGAGE website linked below.

In the eight-week program, participating students will...

  • learn about lab safety training
  • work on a faculty-mentored research project
  • articulate what they have learned on a research poster or oral presentation at the annual summer symposium
  • network and engage with students from other research labs
  • integrate to the four-year institution experience

We know that participating in research, a high-impact practice, helps community college students in the transferring process, retain in their major, and graduate on time.
