It was my pleasure to be invited to be the single juror for the 31st Ink and Clay exhibition at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. As usual, it was not an easy task to select a representative grouping of works from the hundreds that were submitted by serious artists throughout the Western United States. I have made my best effort to reflect the many styles of work that were presented by the various participants without imposing my particular aesthetic bias. Indeed, the diverse work in both ink and clay is an accurate depiction of what I feel to be he nature of the art world at this time. There is simply no single stylistic indicator as there might have been in the latter part of the 20th century. In looking at the slides I did not feel any sense of regionalism and instead felt that the work submitted was very much in tune with national and international standards. This is both a plus and a minus since it is always my hope to find that unique and highly personal expression that marks the true artist. You the viewer are left to determine whether I found this or not. As we move into the 21st century, with the rapid advance of technology, the act of jurying becomes increasingly complex as the definitions of categories become increasingly blurred. Fortunately, I was not asked to determine what is or what isn’t a print or for that matter, what or what isn’t ink. Clay is simpler but there is always that uneasy middle ground between craft and art, between form and function. Again, happily, I was not asked to make this determination.I look on juried exhibitions as critiques. Whether you were accepted this year or not, I urge you to continue to submit since this show represents only one person’s opinion. Finally, a word to the wise. At least five percent of the slides submitted were too dark to be readable and therefore they were reject out of hand. I find this to be a great loss. In future I urge you to always submit your best work and to present it in the best way possible.
