Thailand: Learn to Teach English and Explore the Rich Ancient Culture

The Department of English and Modern Languages invites CPP students to participate in a Study Abroad Program in Thailand. The program will take place at the Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT), a little outside of the capital Bangkok.

The program is open to any major on campus.

Program Description

  • Students will spend three weeks developing their skills as teachers of English as a Foreign Language to RMUTT students in General English or English for International Communication
  • This hands-on experience will include 12 hours per week of classroom contact under the mentorship of the local EFL professors and reflection and the CPP faculty leader (Dr. Olga Griswold). Lesson preparation and training sessions will also be provided as needed during the trip.
  • The remainder of the weekdays and the weekends will be spent in cultural activities, visits to important historical and archeological sites and temples, to the famous floating and weekend markets, and to the parks and shops.
  • The tentative dates for the trip are June 28 – July 19, 2024
  • The projected cost for the trip is approximately $2950 and includes:
    • Airfare
    • Travel agency costs
    • Cultural trips
    • Group meals
    • Visa if needed
    • The course fee for the summer
  • RMUTT will provide housing free of charge to the students at its on-campus hotel for up to 18 students (based on the double room occupancy).
  • Enrollment in this Study Abroad Program for the Summer of 2024 requires students to complete a preparatory course in the Spring ’24 unless they already have completed one of the similar ones in the past. Courses that meet this requirement are:
    • ENG 4230 (Teaching English Abroad) taken at any point in the past or in the Spring of ’24. The Spring ’24 section is offered fully online with one synchronous Zoom meeting on Wednesdays, 4:00 – 5:15 PM
    • ENG 4410 (Internship Cooperative Education) taken at any point in the past. The course is not offered in the Spring ‘24
    • ENG 4990 (Special Topics: Teaching English in Thailand). This is a one-semester special topics course that will be offered in the Spring ’24 to accommodate students wanting to participate in the trip but unable to take ENG 4230. It will be offered fully online with one synchronous Zoom meeting Wednesdays 5:30 – 6:45 PM.  All materials will be provided electronically free of charge.
