Gilman Scholarship Ambassador Program

What 2020 Alumni Ambassadors have to say:

"One of my favorite parts of the program was connecting with other alumni. One way I did this was by hosting a networking hour. We had a great turnout and it was nice to just be in a community and share resources, and know that we're in this together."

"I think what's great about being an Alumni Ambassador is, it's like being a community leader. What's great about the Gilman Alumni experience is the continued community and events."

"I would say one of the many reasons to be an Alumni Ambassador is, it really helps you to develop leadership skills. I went into being a Gilman Ambassador without ever doing anything like this before. The program really helps you develop professional skills and gives you resources, and now I feel so much more comfortable giving presentations and public speaking."

Alumni Ambassadors serve as official representatives of the U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. Approximately 25 Gilman alumni from across the United States are selected each year to be ambassadors and they serve for one year.

Alumni Ambassadors represent the Gilman Program to various audiences, including prospective applicants, college/university staff, and the general public. Alumni Ambassadors also build a sense of community among Gilman Alumni in their region and nationally through in-person and online engagement. For example, the 2020-2021 Alumni Ambassadors advocated for the Gilman Program to members of Congress, organized informational virtual presentations at universities and colleges across the United States, participated in Gilman Program Ask Me Anything sessions, organized Alumni Virtual Networking hours, mentored new Gilman Scholars through the Gilman Scholar network, and wrote blog posts on the Gilman Global Experience blog.

Alumni Ambassadors should expect to spend approximately 3-5 hours per month on Alumni Ambassador activities. Activities such as informational presentations, application workshops, webinars, and Ask Me Anything sessions occur Monday-Friday during the day. Alumni Ambassadors are expected to attend a 1-hour monthly check-in meeting with the Gilman team and other ambassadors.
