Science Clubs and Events

science council events

There are over 30 science clubs in the College of Science. See the list below or visit the Science Council’s website to find out more. Club rush will take place in the 4th week of the Fall Semester.

Clubs are overseen and supported by the Science Council which is a student group that also hosts events. For the 2022-2023 school year the Science Council will be led by Ivy Wang and Sarah Sharif who will act as co-presidents.

Some fall events:

  • Club Rush
Offers opportunities to attend information sessions with clubs.
  • Science Luncheons with Professors
They’ll be continuing this popular event which offers an informal opportunity for students to have lunch with science professors in the courtyard between buildings 3 & 8. Lunch is provided.
  • Halloween – Pumpkin decorating, costume contest, decor contest, scavenger hunt, trivia game night.
  • Coffee and Conversation with the Dean
In collaboration with the Dean’s Office there will be an opportunity to have an informal talk and drink coffee or tea with the Dean

Meet the Science Council Presidents:

Ivy Wang

Ivy Wang is a chemistry major who spent her summer at an REU in Northeastern University conducting research on using corn storage protein in artificial meat. She served as a Prete Fellow, teaching science to 6th graders, is a McNair Scholar, NSF SPIRES Fellow, and received a student research award at the 2022 Dr. Chevy Axelrad Goldstein Distinguished Lecture and Student Research Awards.

She loves learning and after taking organic chemistry with Alex John she became even more passionate about science.  She conducts research in John’s lab and plans to pursue a Ph.D. in polymer research. John’s lab focuses on green chemistry and Wang wants to go work in industrial R&D to develop sustainable materials.

Her advice to other students? "Take ownership of your undergrad experience, that’s when your career really takes off. Go to office hours and interact with faculty even if you don’t need specific course help. Because of my interaction with Professor John, I got to meet other students, to find out about internships, and to go to conferences. There are so many opportunities out there for you!"

Sarah Sharif

Sarah Sharif is a biology major with an interest in neuroscience and physiology. She spent her summer at an REU called Engineering Materials for a Healthy World at University of Colorado Boulder. At CPP she’s a research assistant in Professor Steele’s lab, working on diet-induced obesity and food anticipatory activity projects. She’s an LSAMP Fellow and served on the executive board of the Research Scholars Association.

Sharif always liked science and took seven science classes in high school. She participated in the medical careers academy at her high school and though she liked the courses, she realized a medical career was not for her. She plans to go to graduate school and become a professor.

Her advice to other students? “Joining clubs on campus was one of the best decisions I made at Cal Poly Pomona. You get to meet students with similar interests and get more involved on campus. I highly encourage joining a club to be part of a community!”
