November 2, 2023

Seven Cal Poly Pomona students recently received scholarships from an organization of food science and technology professionals.

At an Oct. 18 dinner meeting in Garden Grove, the Southern California Institute of Food Technologists Section (SCIFTS) awarded scholarships to:

  • Jane Zhang
  • Shuting Cheng
  • Daniela Moore
  • Jerry Larin
  • Ellie Cramton
  • Chun Choi
  • Justin Diep.

In addition, Zhang received a scholarship named in honor of the late Wayne Bidlack, who served as dean of the Huntley College of Agriculture from 1995 to 2007 and afterward taught in the Department of Human Nutrition and Food Science.

The scholarships typically range from $2,000 to $5,000.

During the meeting, Zhang and Moore, who are both graduate students, also participated in the Three Minute 3M Thesis competition or 3MT.

Participants in the competition had to present food science research in three minutes to an audience that has no background in the field. They were limited to using one visual aid, usually a PowerPoint slide.

The competition format was originally created in Australia.

Moore received the 2nd place award in the competition.

SCIFTS exists to support a quality food supply through science, technology, and education.
