Participate in the PLS Department
The Political Science Club
The Political Science Club is the primary organization in which most of our students participate in extracurricular activities on campus. This student-led organization meets every Thursday in 5-138 at noon to discuss politics, advise students through coursework and the major, but serve in student leadership positions in the department. Everyone is invited to attend and join the club, feel free to come by a meeting unannounced.
National Model United Nations
The National Model United Nations (NMUM) Team is Cal Poly Pomona's award-winning, nationally-recognized student competition organization. Cal Poly Pomona has a 40-year history of participating in the national simulation in New York City. Every fall semester, students apply for a position on the team and spring semester researching and writing policy papers for a country they have been assigned to represent. Students from all across campus are invited to submit applications for the NMUN Team.
Bronco Mock Trial Team
The Department of Political Science is host to the university's competitive Mock Trial Team. As many of our majors are interested in pursuing a law degree and careers in the legal field, many of our students elect to join Bronco Mock Trial to learn the procedure and nature of participating in simulated criminal cases. Bronco Mock Trial has won multiple awards and received recognition for their outstanding work and local, regional, and national competitions.
Model Organization of American States
Each year, universities from member nations gather for the national simulation in Washington, D.C. The universities play the part of different member nations, introducing resolutions addressing different political, economic and social issues in the Western Hemisphere — much like the Model UN does with global issues. Each year's team will play the role of an assigned country. The students participating also take a specialized course in preparation for the Model OAS event, researching which positions their country would take on issues before the general assembly.
Our department does an excellent job in preparing students for their future work and civic engagement by participating in various internship programs throughout the year. The department regularly sponsors our Senior Internship class, Judicial Internship, and the Panetta Internship programs each year. Additionally, students have the opportunity to pursue their own internships and receive course credit. Through internships, our majors really are learning-by-doing!
Study Abroad Trips
The Department of Political Science, under the guidance of Dr. Renford Reese, offers a number of study abroad trips every year. In the past, students have ventured to countries like Amsterdam, Belgium, Canada, China, Dubai, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, and the United Kingdom. Interested students should learn about the requirements to study abroad, which often involves consultation with the campus' International Center.
Undergraduate Journal of Political Science
The Department of Political Science hosts, edits, and publishes its own undergraduate research journal. Students from all around the campus are invited to submit their research papers for inclusion in the year-end volume that encapsulates the best work related to politics. Some of these published papers are full-fledged research projects, but the journal also accepts submissions for papers written for classes. Learn how to submit or read past volumes of the journal.
Pi Sigma Alpha
The Department of Political Science participates in the national honor society for the discipline. If students satisfy a number of different requirements, they are eligible for induction to the political science national honor society, Pi Sigma Alpha. The Department of Political Science honors students at the end of the year by inducting students at the department banquet.
Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of other extra-curricular programs, some offered in the department, and others offered elsewhere on campus. Check out some of the links below.
