2020-2021 Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Associate Professor Chantal Stieber pursues environmentally conscious research that investigates ways to reduce pollutants, examines methods for responsible pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis, and explores ways to eliminate nuclear waste. Stieber has received several prestigious grants since joining CPP in 2015, including a $600,000 Department of Defense grant to purchase an X-ray diffractometer used in determining molecular structures, and a $475,000 NSF CAREER grant, “in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through research and education.” She also mentors numerous students, providing extroardinary research opportunities.

Matthew Povich Receives 2019-2020 Provost's Award

The Provost Award for Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities was awarded to Povich for his research work with students. Povich worked on the Milky Way Project with CPP undergraduate students Tharindu Jayasinghe (‘17, physics) pictured with him, and Don Dixon (‘17, physics).

Chemistry and Biochemistry Chair (now Associate Dean) Lisa Alex Receives the 2019 George P. Hart Award for Outstanding Faculty Leadership
The George P. Hart Award recognizes outstanding faculty leadership. The award committee acknowledged Lisa Alex's contributions to the RTP and lecturer review processes, facility and equipment improvements and leading the department through semester conversion. Alex, who joined the college in 1998, has also served on the Academic Senate for 13 years, has served as faculty advisor to the Science Council, received ASI honorary lifetime membership and was appointed as a Presidential Fellow on the University Strategic Planning Committee. She enjoys teaching biochemistry, molecular biology, and general chemistry.
